Best VPN for Streaming in 2026: Which Ones Actually Work With Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer
Por Ryan Torres

Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and other streaming platforms actively block VPN traffic. The VPNs that "work for streaming" this month might not work next month — the platforms update their block lists regularly.
Here's my current assessment of what's actually working, based on testing in early 2026.
Why Most VPNs Get Blocked
Streaming platforms detect VPN usage in a few ways:
- Recognizing IP addresses associated with data centers (VPN servers look different from residential IPs)
- Blocking entire IP ranges owned by known VPN providers
- Detecting DNS leaks
VPNs fight this by rotating IP addresses, adding residential IPs to their pools, and updating servers. The quality of this infrastructure determines who wins this cat-and-mouse game long-term.
What's Currently Working
Netflix: NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN all reliably unblock Netflix US and Netflix UK in my current tests. I've had occasional issues with specific servers being blocked — switching to a different server in the same country fixed it within seconds in every case.
Hulu: NordVPN and Surfshark work consistently. Hulu's geoblocking is less aggressive than Netflix — the barrier is getting a US IP, which any major VPN can provide.
BBC iPlayer: This one requires a consistent UK IP. NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN all work. NordVPN has been slightly more reliable in my tests — I haven't had a BBC iPlayer connection fail in 6 months with Nord.
Disney+: All three major VPNs unblock Disney+ US. Disney+ international varies — some country-specific libraries are harder to access.
Amazon Prime Video: Works with all three, but Prime Video's regional library differences are the most complex to navigate. Some content is genuinely region-locked at the rights level, not just IP.
Speed: Does It Actually Matter for Streaming?
4K streaming requires about 25 Mbps. Most fast broadband connections can handle this through a VPN with minimal performance loss.
The important speed metric isn't your raw connection speed — it's your speed after the VPN overhead. On a 100 Mbps+ connection, any of the major VPNs will deliver 4K streaming without buffering. On slower connections (30-50 Mbps), VPN overhead becomes more noticeable.
NordVPN's NordLynx protocol (based on WireGuard) has the lowest overhead in my tests — about 15% speed reduction on average.
My Recommendation for Streaming Specifically
Surfshark is my primary recommendation for most people using a VPN primarily for streaming. Here's why:
- Works reliably with Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Disney+
- Unlimited device connections (use it on your TV, laptop, phone simultaneously)
- 2-year plans run around $2-3/month
- Regular promotional pricing makes it genuinely affordable
NordVPN is better if streaming is only part of your use case and you also care about security features and speed. It's slightly more reliable in edge cases but also more expensive.
The VPN-for-streaming market has matured. Any of the top 3 providers (Nord, Surfshark, Express) will handle the major streaming platforms. The differentiation comes down to price, device limits, and secondary features.
