Samsonite vs Away vs Rimowa: I've Taken All Three on 40+ Flights. Here's the Real Verdict.

I travel for work roughly three weeks out of every month. I've had Samsonite, Away, and Rimowa bags running concurrently in my rotation for the past two years. Not reviews based on one trip — these are observations from real heavy use.

Here's what I've actually found.

The Bags I'm Comparing

  • Samsonite Omni 2 Max (26") — bought January 2024, hardside spinner, about $170 on sale
  • Away The Medium (hardside) — received as a gift, checked retail price ~$295
  • Rimowa Essential Check-In L — company expense, $700+

Yes, these span an enormous price range. That's intentional — I want to understand whether the premium is justified at each tier.

Durability After 40+ Flights

Samsonite: The Omni 2 Max has two minor scuffs on the corner and the handle mechanism has gotten slightly stiffer (still fully functional). The TSA locks work. The shell shows no cracking. For a $170 bag, this is remarkable durability.

Away: This is where Away's reputation for quality holds up. After the same number of flights (it's in rotation, not the only bag), the shell looks nearly new. The 360-degree spinners are still smoother than the Samsonite's. The interior organization is genuinely better designed.

Rimowa: Rimowa's grooved aluminum or polycarbonate construction is simply in a different durability class. My Essential shows zero shell damage after flights, gate checks, and handling that would have dinged lesser bags. The flex-frame tech is real.

The durability ranking in my experience: Rimowa > Away > Samsonite. But the gap between Away and Samsonite is smaller than the price gap suggests.

Weight: A Bigger Deal Than People Realize

This matters when you're trying to hit airline weight limits.

BagDimensionsBag WeightUsable capacity
Samsonite Omni 2 Max 26"26×18×12"8.6 lbs~85L
Away The Medium26.5×18.5×10.5"8.49 lbs~68L
Rimowa Essential Check-In L30.7×20.9×12.2"11.6 lbs~85L

The Rimowa is heavy. On a 50-lb checked bag limit, the Rimowa starts you with 11.6 lbs before you pack anything. The Samsonite and Away are similar in weight, though Away's usable capacity is notably smaller.

If you're a heavy packer on airlines with strict weight limits, Rimowa works against you.

Organization: Away Wins This One Clearly

Away's interior design is genuinely better than the competition in this price range. The compression system works. The laundry bag is useful (not gimmicky). The organizational pockets are well-placed.

Samsonite's interior is functional but basic. Rimowa's is clean but minimalist — you're paying for the shell and construction, not interior organizational features.

If you care about being able to find things quickly in your bag, the Away advantage here is real.

Price vs. Value

Here's my honest take:

Samsonite (~$170): Best value per dollar. Will handle normal business travel for 3-5 years easily. The right choice if you're not checking bags frequently or you travel casually.

Away (~$295): Worth the premium over Samsonite if you check bags regularly and appreciate better interior organization and smoother spinners. Not as dramatic a quality jump as the price difference might suggest, but it's there.

Rimowa ($700+): Only justifiable if you travel constantly, truly heavy use, or you want the bag to last 10+ years. The durability and aesthetics are legitimate, but you're paying a significant premium for it.

Deals and When to Buy

Samsonite runs significant sales — Black Friday, Amazon Prime Day, and seasonal clearances often hit 40-50% off. I've seen the Omni 2 Max at $99. That's an absolute steal for what it is.

Away does seasonal sales but doesn't discount as aggressively (20-30% max during sales events).

Rimowa almost never goes on sale. If it's on sale, buy it immediately.

For most travelers: buy Samsonite during a sale, check SaveMoreDaily for current codes before you buy. You'll get an excellent bag for $100-130 and be happy with it.
